Making a lasting change – protecting children in travel and tourism

A number of factors shape children’s vulnerability to sexual exploitation in the Southeast Asian region, including development of technology and growing travel and tourism. In Malaysia, as noted in the Out of the Shadows Index, industry engagement is needed to better protect children against online child sexual abuse and in the context of travel and tourism.

Malaysia received a high score for ICT industry engagement indicators. However, beyond technology, the travel and tourism industry is in a unique position to identify the most vulnerable and to prevent the sexual exploitation of children. As of 2019, only one Malaysian company has joined the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Children from Sexual Exploitation in Travel and Tourism – a global initiative that provides tools and support to the private sector.

ECPAT International together with The End CSEC Network Malaysia will present how travel and tourism companies and other key players can uphold international standards on children’s rights through introducing policies, practices and establishing codes of conduct to protect children, as a key step forward for a responsible tourism destination during “Visit Malaysia 2020 Year”.
